15. November 12, 2011. “Who owns you?

I was listening to an interview with a prominent person recently. The interviewer asked a very valuable question. The even more valuable answer was a statement about the current thinking in America.

The answer was that our income tax is based on the idea that we are owned by our government. Therefore, the government has the right to tell us how much of the money we earn we are allowed to keep.

I will now take you back to the time of the American Civil War. European bankers offered to loan money to the USA to fight the war. President Lincoln wisely refused their offer. The Bankers circulated among themselves what is know as the “hazard letter”. That letter asserted that the American system must not be allowed to stand. In slavery the owner is responsible to house, clothe and feed his slaves. They asserted that their system (economic slavery) was better because it required the slave to provide for himself.

The answer pointed out a very vital Bible Principle.

KJV 1 Corinthians 6:19 What? know ye not … ye are not your own?

If I am not my own, then who owns me? If you don’t know about yourself, then this is your opportunity to find out just who owns you?

The idea of ownership applies to: 1) husbands and wives, 2) parents and children as well as 3) slaves and slave owners. These comparisons are used frequently in the Bible to describe the relations between; 1) unbelievers and Satan, and 2) believers and God.

God tells us to be sure who owns us.

NET 2 Corinthians 13:5 Put yourselves to the test to see if you are in the faith; examine yourselves! Or do you not recognize regarding yourselves that Jesus Christ is in you– unless, indeed, you fail the test!

How do you know whether or not Jesus Christ is in you?

1) Did you receive Him as your Savior?

NAS John 1:12 But as many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become children of God, even to those who believe in His name,

2) Is He still living in you? Are you exercising the right?

KJV Luke 11:13 If ye then, being evil, know how to give good gifts unto your children: how much more shall your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to them that ask him?

3) What evidence is there that He is living in you?

(Mar 16:17-18 KJV)17 And these signs shall follow them that believe; In my name shall they cast out devils; they shall speak with new tongues;
18 They shall take up serpents; and if they drink any deadly thing, it shall not hurt them; they shall lay hands on the sick, and they shall recover.

(Joh 15:4-11 KJV)4 Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself, except it abide in the vine; no more can ye, except ye abide in me.
5 I am the vine, ye are the branches: He that abideth in me, and I in him, the same bringeth forth much fruit: for without me ye can do nothing.
6 If a man abide not in me, he is cast forth as a branch, and is withered; and men gather them, and cast them into the fire, and they are burned.
7 If ye abide in me, and my words abide in you, ye shall ask what ye will, and it shall be done unto you.
8 Herein is my Father glorified, that ye bear much fruit; so shall ye be my disciples.
9 As the Father hath loved me, so have I loved you: continue ye in my love.
10 If ye keep my commandments, ye shall abide in my love; even as I have kept my Father’s commandments, and abide in his love.
11 These things have I spoken unto you, that my joy might remain in you, and that your joy might be full.

KJV John 13:35 By this shall all men know that ye are my disciples, if ye have love one to another.

(Rom 6:12-14 KJV)
12 Let not sin therefore reign in your mortal body, that ye should obey it in the lusts thereof.
13 Neither yield ye your members as instruments of unrighteousness unto sin: but yield yourselves unto God, as those that are alive from the dead, and your members as instruments of righteousness unto God.
14 For sin shall not have dominion over you: for ye are not under the law, but under grace.

(Rom 6:16 KJV)16 Know ye not, that to whom ye yield yourselves servants to obey, his servants ye are to whom ye obey; whether of sin unto death, or of obedience unto righteousness?

KJV Romans 8:1 There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit.

14. Learning Obedience. October 29, 2011.

NAS Hebrews 5:8 Although He was a Son, He learned obedience from the things which He suffered.

Why did Jesus suffer to learn obedience? We often overlook this text in favor of thinking about Jesus suffering while bearing our sins.

Jesus would not have been able to bear our sins if he had not first fully learned obedience. His obedience was total. He had nothing he did in His own way.

NET John 8:28 Then Jesus said, “When you lift up the Son of Man, then you will know that I am he, and I do nothing on my own initiative, but I speak just what the Father taught me.

One time when I was in college, I did a job in a way that happened to work, but could have caused problems. I was proud that I did it in less than half the time expected of me.

My supervisor was not happy that I did not follow directions. He wanted to fire me, but the manager protected me and put me on a different job where that supervisor didn’t have to oversee me.
The manager told me about it and said he knew there were many ways to do something “right”. However, when the boss tells you how to do it. Do it the way he tells you.

When Jesus obeyed, He obeyed 1) willingly and 2) completely. He did not change or alter anything from what His Father said or did.

Yes, Jesus did suffer abuse and opposition when He did what His Father did and said what His Father said. Can we expect any less from a sinful world?

Sadly, the religious world is just as evil and corrupt as it was in the days of Jesus. Your church “friends” will come to you to help you to have a happier experience by not being so “exact” or “righteous”. They want you to compromise for the sake of comfort and friendship.

A person asked me to be reconciled with a person who was opposing God and had told me never to come back to church. I answered, “coming into agreement with that other person would put me in danger of being in agreement in the Lake of Fire”.

I refuse to be in the group that asked Jesus what to do and then left because they didn’t want to do it.

(Joh 6:28-29 KJV)28 Then said they unto him, What shall we do, that we might work the works of God? 29 Jesus answered and said unto them, This is the work of God, that ye believe on him whom he hath sent.

To believe in Jesus is a narrow road. Those people quit following Him after hearing how to apply the directions He gave them. They did not want to follow and in order to obey and then understand the instruction.

NIV John 6:60 On hearing it, many of his disciples said, “This is a hard teaching. Who can accept it?”

We often put our brains in the way of letting God teach us. We try to analyze and then fit everything into our opinion of how things should be done. This is a sure path to disaster.

NAS John 7:17 “If any man is willing to do His will, he shall know of the teaching, whether it is of God, or whether I speak from Myself.

Many people will be lost because of their trying to be clever and do things their own way. That is a guaranteed way to fail. There is only one way and it is a narrow road of obedience. We obey, not because we understand, but because we believe God.

NIV Matthew 7:21 “Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only the one who does the will of my Father who is in heaven.

13. October 22, 2011. “Be Jealous”.

God is jealous. “Or do you think that the Scripture speaks to no purpose: “He jealously desires the Spirit which He has made to dwell in us”?” (James 4:5 NAS). We need to understand His jealousy to have the same king of jealousy.

Knowing God’s Will

Often I hear church people say, I don’t think it is God’s will for me to be healed.

Others will suggest that we really can’t know God’s will for our lives.

These comments make me ask a few very important questions.

1. If it is not God’s will for you to be healed, then why would you oppose God’s will by spending money for doctors and medicines?

2. If your response to question 1 is to say that you really can’t know God’s will, then why pray? If God doesn’t want you to know His will, what is the benefit of praying to such a remote being.

Let’s take a look at Scripture and see if God’s will is available for us to know.

KJV Colossians 1:9 For this cause we also, since the day we heard it, do not cease to pray for you, and to desire that ye might be filled with the knowledge of his will in all wisdom and spiritual understanding;

Apparently the Apostle Paul believed that If he prayed, the believers would be FILLED WITH THE KNOWLEDGE OF GOD’S WILL.

A teaching is only valid if established by at least two witnesses. Next??

KJV John 7:17 If any man will do his will, he shall know of the doctrine, whether it be of God, or whether I speak of myself.

KJV John 9:31 Now we know that God heareth not sinners: but if any man be a worshipper of God, and doeth his will, him he heareth.

NAS Acts 22:14 “And he said, ‘The God of our fathers has appointed you to know His will, and to see the Righteous One, and to hear an utterance from His mouth.

NAS Romans 2:17,18 But if you bear the name “Jew,” and rely upon the Law, and boast in God, and know His will, and approve the things that are essential, being instructed out of the Law,

NAS Ephesians 1:5 He predestined us to adoption as sons through Jesus Christ to Himself, according to the kind intention of His will,

KJV Ephesians 1:9 Having made known unto us the mystery of his will, according to his good pleasure which he hath purposed in himself:

NAS Hebrews 13:20 Now the God of peace, who brought up from the dead the great Shepherd of the sheep through the blood of the eternal covenant, even Jesus our Lord, equip you in every good thing to do His will, working in us that which is pleasing in His sight, through Jesus Christ, to whom be the glory forever and ever. Amen.

NAS 1 John 5:14 And this is the confidence which we have before Him, that, if we ask anything according to His will, He hears us.

These texts show us that God really says we can know His will. How can we know God’s will?

1 It is often given directly in the Bible.

KJV Psalm 40:8 I delight to do thy will, O my God: yea, thy law is within my heart.

2 The Holy Spirit is willing to speak to those who believe and obey.

KJV Psalm 143:10 Teach me to do thy will; for thou art my God: thy spirit is good; lead me into the land of uprightness.

3 Obedience is the will of God for every believer in Jesus.

(Heb 10:4-10 KJV)4 For it is not possible that the blood of bulls and of goats should take away sins.

5 Wherefore when he cometh into the world, he saith, Sacrifice and offering thou wouldest not, but a body hast thou prepared me:

6 In burnt offerings and sacrifices for sin thou hast had no pleasure.

7 Then said I, Lo, I come (in the volume of the book it is written of me,) to do thy will, O God.

8 Above when he said, Sacrifice and offering and burnt offerings and offering for sin thou wouldest not, neither hadst pleasure therein; which are offered by the law;

9 Then said he, Lo, I come to do thy will, O God. He taketh away the first, that he may establish the second.

10 By the which will we are sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all.

A popular saying in many churches is “WHAT WOULD JESUS DO?”

What did Jesus do? HE DID GOD’S WILL.

Jesus did not have any doubt he was doing God’s will.

NAS John 5:19 Jesus therefore answered and was saying to them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, the Son can do nothing of Himself, unless it is something He sees the Father doing; for whatever the Father does, these things the Son also does in like manner.

NAS John 5:36 “But the witness which I have is greater than that of John; for the works which the Father has given Me to accomplish, the very works that I do, bear witness of Me, that the Father has sent Me.

NAS John 6:40 “For this is the will of My Father, that everyone who beholds the Son and believes in Him, may have eternal life; and I Myself will raise him up on the last day.”

HOW DID JESUS KNOW GOD’S WILL?

NAS Romans 6:17 But thanks be to God that though you were slaves of sin, you became obedient from the heart to that form of teaching to which you were committed,

KJV Luke 4:1 And Jesus being full of the Holy Ghost returned from Jordan, and was led by the Spirit into the wilderness,

NAS John 1:14 And the Word became flesh, and dwelt among us, and we beheld His glory, glory as of the only begotten from the Father, full of grace and truth.

NET Acts 2:28 You have made known to me the paths of life; you will make me full of joy with your presence.’

NAS Acts 6:3 “But select from among you, brethren, seven men of good reputation, full of the Spirit and of wisdom, whom we may put in charge of this task.

NAS Acts 6:5 And the statement found approval with the whole congregation; and they chose Stephen, a man full of faith and of the Holy Spirit,

NAS Acts 6:8 And Stephen, full of grace and power, was performing great wonders and signs among the people.

NAS Acts 7:55 But being full of the Holy Spirit, he gazed intently into heaven and saw the glory of God, and Jesus standing at the right hand of God;

(Rom 15:13-14 KJV)13 Now the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, that ye may abound in hope, through the power of the Holy Ghost. 14 And I myself also am persuaded of you, my brethren, that ye also are full of goodness, filled with all knowledge, able also to admonish one another.
