500 Anniversary of the Reformation

Мартин Лютер прибивает свои тезисы к двери католической церквиWe have a wonderful reason to celebrate a great event in history of humanity.

On October 31, 1517, Martin Luther, a German monk, nailed the 95 theses on a church door in the university town of Wittenberg. By doing this he set the Church Reformation in motion.

During the Reformation five Latin statements emerged that summarize the Reformers’ theological convictions about the essentials of Christianity:

  1. Sola Scriptura (“Scripture alone”): The Bible alone is our highest authority.
  2. Sola Fide (“faith alone”): We are saved through faith alone in Jesus Christ.
  3. Sola Gratia (“grace alone”): We are saved by the grace of God alone.
  4. Solus Christus (“Christ alone”): Jesus Christ alone is our Lord, Savior, Mediator between God and man, and King.
  5. Soli Deo Gloria (“to the glory of God alone”): We live for the glory of God alone.

The reformers formulated ethical principles and have set new models of behavior. Because of that positive social, educational, cultural, political and economic transformations became possible. Thus, Reformation not only transformed the Church, in many respects it shaped the world in which we live in.

Happy Anniversary!

How to Pray for Our Leaders

“It is a great privilege, as well as our responsibility, to pray for our government leaders.” — Billy Graham

WHAT THE BIBLE SAYS

“I urge, then, first of all, that petitions, prayers, intercession and thanksgiving be made for all people—for kings and all those in authority, that we may live peaceful and quiet lives in all godliness and holiness. This is good, and pleases God our Savior.” —1 Timothy 2:1–3, NIV

  • Petition means to ask. God urges us to ask, and He is pleased when we do.
  • Prayer is talking to God, anywhere, anytime, in any way.
  • Intercession is praying for someone else. The Bible tells us that Jesus Christ constantly intercedes for us (see Romans 8:34. Hebrews 7:25), so it pleases God when we intercede for someone else—including heads of state and others in authority—because we are doing what Christ does.
  • Thanksgiving always pleases God, and the Bible specifically tells us to include thanksgiving when praying for those in authority.

—————-

We are to pray respectfully for leaders. “Show proper respect to everyone, … fear God, honor the emperor”  (1 Peter 2:17). We are to pray with the clear understanding that government authority is established by God. “Everyone must submit to the governing authorities, for there is no authority except that which God has established. The authorities that exist have been established by God” (Romans 13:1). We also pray knowing that God’s Word says, “The king’s heart is like channels of water in the hand of the Lord; He turns it wherever He wishes” (Proverbs 21:1, NASB).

WHAT  TO PRAY

You can pray using words and thoughts from Scripture.

Suggestions:

  • Open the heart [name of any leader] to hear and respond to the Gospel message if he/she does not know you. Acts 16:14, Luke 24:45
  • Help [name] to accept wise counsel. Proverbs 11:14; 15:22
  • Teach [name] to trust in You. Psalm 21:7
  • Protect [name] from the influence of the evil one. 2 Thessalonians 3:3
  • Give [name] discretion, foresight, and understanding in making decisions. 1 Chronicles 22:12
  • Generously answer his/her prayer for wisdom. James 1:5
  • Pour out Your Spirit on his/her leadership. Proverbs 1:23
  • Deliver [name] from opinions contrary to Your Word. Psalm 119:105
  • Guard [name] from harm, and bless and protect his/her family. Psalm 21:11; Ezra 6:10
  • Enable [name] to carry out his/her duties with humility talking to God about those in authority, toward You and toward others. 1 Peter 5:5
  • Give [name] the courage to do the right thing even when urged to do the wrong thing. Proverbs 2:11–15
  • Grant [name] a tender heart of compassion toward those he/she leads and serves. Colossians 3:12

The Atonement: An Examination Of A Remedial System In The Light Of Nature And Revelation. By J.H. Waggoner.

“Sincere respect for the men of early times may be joined

with a clear perception of their weaknesses and errors; and

it becomes us to remember, that errors, which in them were

innocent, because inevitable, may deserve a harsher

appellation if perpetuated in their posterity.

WILLIAM ELLERY CHANNING.

IN TWO PARTS.

PACIFIC PRESS: OAKLAND, CAL.,

REVIEW & HERALD: BATTLE CREEK, MICH. 1884.

PREFACE: — By all who have faith in the efficacy of the blood of Christ to cleanse from sin, the Atonement is confessed to be the great central doctrine of the gospel. On this they agree, however much they may differ on other

doctrines, or on the relations of this. And yet the number of books on this subject is not large, compared with the number on many others, not held to be as fundamental in the Christian system as this.

In developing the argument we have tried to follow the Scriptures in their plain, literal reading, without regard to the positions of others who have written before us. It would be a pleasure to us to agree with all who are considered evangelical, and we have differed with them only because our regard for the truths of the Bible compelled us to do so.

With those who consider it necessary to apologize for the Bible, the writer has little sympathy. It is a noticeable fact that of all the writers and speakers whose words are recorded in the Bible, no one ever undertook a defense of the sacred word. “The Scriptures” were appealed to as final authority by both Christ and his apostles; and if any denied their authority, they were considered beyond the reach of proof — they would not believe though one should rise from the dead. Luke 16:31. And when men of a certain class denied a Scripture truth, the Son of God did not meet them with philosophy or science, but settled the question by an appeal to the word itself, answering: “Ye do err, not knowing the Scriptures nor the power of God.” Matt. 22:29.

The reader may then question why we have departed from the beaten track in laying the foundation of an atonement by an appeal to principles of reason and of law. It was because we believe that something is due to those who have received erroneous ideas of the doctrine from those who stood as religious teacher. Many have assailed the Atonement because of the unwise teachings of its professed advocates.

They affirm that it is a doctrine which leads to license and immorality; and they are confirmed in their opinion by the positions of learned theologians who deny that justice underlies the Atonement, virtually, and often openly,

declaring that the gospel does not establish and vindicate the law of God. We do not believe that outside of “theology” a soul could be found who would insist that pardon of a crime absolved the criminal from obligation to

the law which condemned him for the commission of the crime! The power to pardon should be used with prudence, and is always committed to those who are sworn to maintain the authority of the law.

Слово Боже на цей день – Библия на сей день – Scripture for the day

1 But in the last days it shall come to pass, that the mountain of the house of the LORD shall be established in the top of the mountains, and it shall be exalted above the hills; and people shall flow unto it.
6 In that day, saith the LORD, will I assemble her that halteth, and I will gather her that is driven out, and her that I have afflicted;
7 And I will make her that halted a remnant, and her that was cast far off a strong nation: and the LORD shall reign over them in mount Zion from henceforth, even for ever. (Micah 4:1, 6-7 KJV)

Anointing of the Holy Ghost

Go to Ephesians, chapter 1, and I’ll read a couple of Scriptures.

One of the things that has been going through my mind for the last couple of days… It has been a lot said about brokenness and this kind of thing. The bottom line is, if we do not do it God’s way, we are going to burn. We do not have any other option. Whether we like it or not, it is not my fault, it is the way it is done. I will read verses 13 & 14. You may not make a lot of sense out of it.

Pastor Jake Riehl

13 In whom ye also trusted, after that ye heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation: in whom also after that ye believed, ye were sealed with that holy Spirit of promise,

14 Which is the earnest of our inheritance… (Eph 1:13-14)

You are not getting it, are you? Those words that I just read there, simply mean God’s down payment on your life through the Holy Ghost to get you moving in the things of God. I don’t know. One of the things I’ve been pondering: the value of the anointing, the value of being filled with the Holy Ghost, value of me as a person being in a place where that anointing can pour into me on a daily-daily-daily {bases} is the only way at the end of my day what I’ve done in this life is not going to burn. And everything I’ve ever done for God I owe to the anointing of Christ. And everything that I will ever become and I’m going to become I owe to the anointing. There is no other way.

And there are time that each of us here gets sidetracked a little bit. And at those times when we look at life and say, “You know what? I’m going back to Bethel. I am going back to the Father. I’m going to humble myself and do what it takes to get where I need to get to”.

14 Which is the earnest of our inheritance until the redemption of the purchased possession, unto the praise of his glory. (Eph 1:13-14 KJV)

It is God’s down payment on your life to get you where you need to get to. It’s the Holy Ghost.

“Cowards never won heaven. Do not claim that you are begotten of God and have His royal blood running in your veins unless you can prove your lineage by this heroic spirit: to dare to be holy in spite of men and devils.”1

It is a humiliating fact when we realize, “I can’t do it on my own. I need the anointing of God Almighty.” A lot of things get said about it. I want to touch on it a little bit.

Duncan Campbell said this, “Preaching truth without anointing of the Holy Ghost is to help  devils to damn souls.” It’s that anointing that every soul that I ever got saved is what I owe it to. That anointing only will come on you through brokenness and spending time with Jesus.

If that teaching that we got this week makes our brain a little bigger, we’ve totally missed it. If that faith that we are being taught, that mind change and repentance that we are being taught, going back to the Anabaptists, and we can think we can do it on our own, we are going to fall flat on our face. These things that are being spoken to get us to a place called closet where we cry out to the Almighty God for that anointing, for that power, for that endowment, that wisdom, that utterance, that cry!

I remember one day I’ve changed my mind. I don’t have time to tell you where I was, but Jake was a critical {person}. There are few other words that I probably have to add to that, and one time the Holy Ghost stopped me in a very unusual place. And I told God, “I will never ever be critical again.” That was 4 years ago. I decided it is not an option for me to go back.

Every one of us is in need of the anointing of the Holy Ghost. It is not that difficult. Some of you may think, “I need to pray more, I need to fast more.” I’ll talk about something else in a minute.

“There is nothing on earth today so deadening as preaching without the Heaven’s anointing. Refrain from preaching unless you know that the dew of Heaven is on your life.”2, on your soul.

Don’t try to win a soul by going in the streets, you find them in your prayer closet. That is true.

When Wasting Time Is the Most Productive Thing You Can Do

The hems of my soggy pants brush my ankles, sending chills up my spine.

Grass confetti sticks like static electricity to my shoes with each step.

I stop and stare at the horizon; my hand covers my squinting eyes, an awning shielding the brightness.

I’ve memorized this moment for eleven months, breathless with the reality. Captivated by simple beauty, I sit down and mentally retrace the familiar lines of the landscape.

Water gently laps on the shoreline, the sun illuminating the lake like a flash mob of photographers.

Children’s voices and the hum of a boat echo from miles across; the blue cloudless sky meets inky indigo water. A bird trills from two houses beyond, breaking my trance, diverting my attention toward the beach strewn with sand toys, water skis, and crumpled beach towels.

I hear myself exhale. And think…

Time is a relentless river. It rages on, a respecter of no one. Shelly Miller shows how to slow the torrent by fully living in the moment. On a walk at dusk she discovers when time slows, God’s voice is clear. Answers for questions about loneliness and belonging come quickly through one simple but curious word: Sabbath. As a pastor’s wife, London expat, and mom of two adult children, she knows what it means to get lost in the current and how wasting time can be a life raft. Today, Shelly guides us in finding our unique rhythms of rest. It’s a grace to welcome Shelly to the farm’s front porch today…

The Date and Meaning of Christmas

Another Look at the Date of Christ’s Birth

Noel Goh, Pastor and Professor

Christmas is a church tradition that celebrates and commemorates the miraculous event of birth of the Son of God from a virgin’s womb to save the world from sin. It is a festivity that continues to have a major impact on the commercial world as well as family gatherings and gifts giving. Many look forward to this year-end Christmas break even if the significance of the birth of the Christ child is not fully appreciated or embraced. The result is a much treasured and much loved holiday.

Objective of this Study

Pastor Noel GohThis review seeks fresh insights from the written account available in the Bible for a possible re-dating of Christ’s actual birth.

Given the weight of tradition and sentiment resting on December 25, it would not be unreasonable to encounter the axiom – “don’t confuse me with the facts; my mind is already made up.” Not withstanding that, allow me to respectfully invite you to an open review of the question: Was Jesus born on December 25 or at another time?

Many people acknowledge that Christ was not born on December 25. Even Sunday school children participating in nativity plays, especially as shepherds, realize that it would be much too cold for shepherds to be outdoors watching their flocks by night in the bleak mid-winter, even if it is only a milder winter in Israel.

Furthermore, many more are aware of how the origin of Christmas on 25 December derives from the celebration of the return of the Sun god on the day of the winter solstice – a day which is now corrected to December 21. History records how the Catholic church stepped in and redeemed an otherwise festival of great wanton orgy in Roman times and transforming it into a festival commemorating the birth of the Son of God.

The Focus of Our Study

As we take a fresh look at the Gospels’ account of the nativity, our concern is to determine, not the year of Christ’s birth, but the approximate time of the year when it occurred. Simply stated: “Do the scriptural records offer clues to ascertain a more likely season in the calendar year when the birth of Jesus would have taken place instead of December 25?”

In reviewing the infancy narratives in the four gospels, one quickly realizes the limited information on dates that are available. However, the account by Luke has more details than the other three which should not surprise us since Luke was a doctor concerned with accuracy. In fact, the Gospel opens expressing the intent to provide an orderly account of carefully investigated facts: “Therefore, since I myself have carefully investigated everything from the beginning, it seemed good also to me to write an orderly account for you, most excellent Theophilus, so that you may know the certainty of the things you have been taught” (Luke 1:3-4).

A likely year could be established from Luke 1:5 “in the time of ….” but as mentioned earlier, this is not our primary concern. Suffice to say that Luke sets the narrative in time and history and introduces the key player for our consideration.

Winning Lost Souls

September 3, 2016

Finding rest for your soul. How to have hope and to give people hope. If people lose hope, they will fail, because they lose their soul. Souls are lost in the world because they do not have hope.
Your soul (mind, will and feelings) has to be anchored. Hope is the anchor to the soul – Hen 6:19. “Which hope we have as an anchor of the soul, both sure and stedfast, and which entereth into that within the veil” (Heb 6:19 KJV).

When people do not have grace, they major on problems and minor on solutions. It makes your world negative.

Lincoln’s Thanksgiving Proclamation

Washington, DC. October 3, 1863

The year that is drawing toward its close has been filled with the blessings of fruitful fields and healthful skies. To these bounties, which are so constantly enjoyed that we are prone to forget the source from which they come, others have been added which are of so extraordinary a nature that they can not fail to penetrate and soften even the heart which is habitually insensible to the ever-watchful providence of Almighty God…

Abraham LincolnWe have been the recipients of the choicest bounties of Heaven. We have been preserved, these many years, in peace and prosperity. We have grown in numbers, wealth and power, as no other nation has ever grown. But we have forgotten God. We have forgotten the gracious Hand which preserved us in peace, and multiplied and enriched and strengthened us; and we have vainly imagined, in the deceitfulness of our hearts, that all these blessings were produced by some superior wisdom and virtue of our own. Intoxicated with unbroken success, we have become too self-sufficient to feel the necessity of redeeming and preserving grace, too proud to pray to the God that made us!1

No human counsel hath devised nor hath any mortal hand worked out these great things. They are the gracious gifts of the Most High God, who, while dealing with us in anger for our sins, hath nevertheless remembered mercy.

It has seemed to me fit and proper that they should be solemnly, reverently, and gratefully acknowledged, as with one heart and one voice, by the whole American people. I do therefore invite my fellow-citizens in every part of the United States, and also those who are in foreign lands, to set apart and observe the last Thursday of November next as a day of thanksgiving and praise to our beneficent Father who dwelleth in the heavens. And I recommend to them that while offering up the ascriptions justly due to Him for such singular deliverances and blessings they do also, with humble penitence for our national perverseness and disobedience, commend to His tender care all those who have become widows, orphans, mourners, or sufferers in the lamentable civil strife in which we are unavoidably engaged, and fervently implore the imposition of the Almighty hand to heal the wounds of the nation and to restore it, as soon as may be consistent with the divine purpose, to the full enjoyment of peace, harmony, tranquillity, and union.

In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand and caused the seal of the United States to be affixed.

Done at the city of Washington {DC}, this 3d day of October, A.D. 1863, and of the Independence of the United States the eighty-eighth.

Lincoln proclaimed Thanksgiving a national holiday in 1863.

Events in Russia

Chapter 2 from the book

“What Awaits Anabaptists in the Last Days”, pp. 3-30.

By Boris, a Christian brother

The revolution took place in Russia in 1917 and Russia was in for 70 years of great darkness, of atheism and the authorities fighting against God. So the Lord, in His mercy and His providence, decided to send help to Russia and put up a standard there and bring the Light of the Gospel into Russia. The Lord sent one man from the USA, filled with the Holy Ghost. He sent him to Russia. He was a Russian man, and he came into Russia started to preach the apostolic message; the message of salvation; the message of sanctification; the message of holiness; the message of dying unto sin; the message of repentance; and the message of also entering the blessing of the Lord – into the outpouring of the Holy Ghost and the miracles of God’s power which are able to be performed when God’s people seek His Face.

Russian people were very simple people at that time. The majority of them were farmers. There was hardly any education. The message preached was believed and so a revival broke out in Russia. It spread like fire through many villages, many towns.

When God sent that man into Russia, revival took over the whole of the Ukraine and all of Russia; as far as the Ural mountains which are the mountains running north and dividing the Russian mainland from Siberia.

So the Lord was doing mighty things and He was establishing a church there; a Living church which was going away from the orthodox church.

There were many people, thousands and thousands of people, coming to the Lord through the simple message and the power of the Holy Ghost like in the days of the apostles.
